OVERVIEW

Full Itinerary for the Machame Route

The eight-night, nine-day Kilimanjaro climb using the Machame route is detailed in the itinerary below. The itinerary below can be shortened to eight days by omitting the overnight stay in the Karanga Valley and walking directly from the Barranco Huts to the Barafu Huts in a single day.

Day 1: Arrival Moshi / Arusha

When you arrive at the airport, our professional driver will take you to your chosen Moshi or Arusha hotel for the night. You will be met at the hotel by our guide or expedition manager to begin the final inspection, briefing, and climbing preparations.

  • Day 3: Shira Cave Camp. ( 3,750 m / 12,303 ft. )

    The trek continues through the moorland zone, offering panoramic views of Kilimanjaro’s peak. The terrain becomes more rugged as you ascend.

  • Distance: ~5 km (3 miles)
  • Duration: ~5-6 hours

  • Day 2: Machame Hut Camp. ( 2,835 m / 9,301 ft. )

    The trek begins through the lush rainforest. You'll pass by diverse flora and fauna before reaching the Machame Camp.

  • Distance: ~11 km (6.5 miles).
  • Duration 5 - 6 hours of trek.

  • Day 4: Barranco Camp. ( 3,900 m / 12,795 ft. )

    This is a longer day with some ups and downs. You’ll traverse the Shira Plateau and then descend into the Barranco Valley. The day includes a significant altitude gain, followed by a drop to aid acclimatization.

  • Distance: ~10 km (6 miles)
  • Duration: ~6-8 hours

  • Day 5: Karanga Camp. ( 3,995 m / 13,106 ft. )

    The day involves climbing the Barranco Wall, a challenging but rewarding ascent. You’ll then descend into the Karanga Valley before camping.

  • Distance: ~6 km (3.7 miles)
  • Duration: ~3-5 hours

  • Day 6: Barafu Camp. ( 4,673 m / 15,331 ft. )

    You’ll begin the summit push very early in the morning. The ascent to the summit takes several hours, and you’ll then descend to Millennium High Camp for the night.

  • Distance: ~5 km (3 miles) (Summit) + ~8.5 km (5.2 miles) (Descent)
  • Duration: ~10-12 hours
  • Altitude: Summit at 5,895 m (19,341 ft), back to Barafu summit camp 4,673 m (15,331 ft.)

  • Day 7: Millennium High Camp. ( 3,950 m / 12,959 ft. )

    After returning from the top, you take a quick break and eat a branch lunch before continuing your journey to Millennium High Camp.

  • Distance: ~3.5 km (2 miles)
  • Duration: ~2 hours.

  • Day 8: From the mountain, return to the hotel. Moshi / Arusha.

    The final descent through the rainforest takes you back to the Machame Gate, where you'll receive your completion certificate and check out.

  • Distance: ~13.5 km (8 miles)
  • Duration: ~5-7 hours
  • Altitude: Descend to 1,650 m (5,413 ft)

  • Day 9: Departure / Safari / Zanzibar

    On this day, you will be returned to the airport, or if you choose to go on an upcoming adventure with us—a safari or a trip to Zanzibar—we will continue to explore with you.

    Most climbers come to us searching for our classic excursions. Our traditional Kilimanjaro hikes are delightful and unforgettable because of the excellent comfort and strict safety regulations that we maintain. Among our clientele, this is the most favored choice.

    This climbing package comes with everything a hiker could possibly need, including expert mountain crews,high-quality group equipment, and meals planned by nutritionists. We follow the same safety procedures for all of our hiking excursions, though, and only certified Wilderness First Responder guides are allowed to lead a party. Additional safety precautions include having an oxygen cylinder supply on hand, comprehensive medical kits, and required daily medical examinations.

    Additional amenities on our premium Kilimanjaro experiences include walk-in tents that are roomy, a sophisticated meal plan during the hike, portable restrooms, camping cots, satellite phones so you can stay in contact with loved ones, and other enhancements.     Machame 6 Days - Classic Package.

    Our Kilimanjaro packages don’t include international flights. You’ll be responsible for covering those costs separately.

    A 90-day single-entry visa costs USD 50 for the majority of nationals. However, the cost of a multi-entry visa is $100 for US citizens. To find out more about Tanzanian visa regulations and requirements, speak with one of our travel consultants.

    On our group adventures, you will have to share a hotel room and a tent with your traveling buddy or another traveler who is the same gender as you. Tell us if you would rather be in a private room or under a tent. Supplements in singles are available for an extra fee. The Marangu route does not offer a single supplement. Overnight stays are provided in room that may hold up to 4 - 6 hikers.

    Our climbing packages do not include travel insurance. All participants must have travel insurance that covers climbing to elevations of up to 6000 meters and a helicopter evacuation in order to participate in our hiking expeditions on Kilimanjaro and Meru. Please get in touch with your insurance provider to confirm that those standards are met and to find out the precise charges, as insurance requirements and costs varies between nations.

    In mountain trekking, tipping your climbing companions is a custom that has been followed for many years worldwide. Tipping your mountain crew is always encouraged at Kilimanjaro Ascent, but it is never required. Particularly if they exceed your expectations. A suggested budget of $250 to $350 USD per person is suggested.

    We don't include any extra activities in our trip packages other than those that come with an additional fee. Examples include camping in a crater, staying at Barafu High Camp (Cossovo) an extra day during the climb, doing a day tour after climbing, or going on a day safari.
