Kilimanjaro Ascent

The Serengeti wildebeest migration is one of the most spectacular wildlife events on the planet, involving millions of animals moving in search of fresh grazing and water. The timing of the migration varies slightly each year due to weather patterns, but there are general periods when you’re more likely to witness specific stages of the migration:

  1. Calving Season (January – February): The wildebeest migration typically begins in the southern Serengeti around January and February when hundreds of thousands of wildebeest give birth to their calves. This period offers incredible opportunities to see newborn animals and witness predator-prey interactions as predators take advantage of the vulnerable young.

  2. Grumeti River Crossing (May – June): As the dry season progresses, the herds start moving northwest towards the Grumeti River. The Grumeti River crossings, usually occurring between May and June, are dramatic events where the wildebeest brave crocodile-infested waters in their quest for greener pastures. This spectacle attracts predators such as lions and crocodiles, creating intense wildlife encounters.

  3. Mara River Crossing (July – October): The highlight of the Serengeti migration is often considered to be the Mara River crossings, which typically occur between July and October as the herds move north into the Maasai Mara in Kenya. These crossings are fraught with danger as the wildebeest navigate treacherous river currents and face ambushes from crocodiles and predators. It’s an adrenaline-filled experience for spectators and a critical period for wildlife photographers.

Choosing the best time to witness the Serengeti wildebeest migration depends on your interests and preferences. If you’re particularly interested in seeing dramatic river crossings, July to October is usually the prime time to visit. However, each stage of the migration offers unique experiences, so it’s worth researching and consulting with tour operators to plan your trip accordingly.
